FATHER & SON TEAM WIN ALL EXPENSE PAID TRIP TO ITALY
Proceeds benefit the Burke Center for Youth in Driftwood, Texas
Austin, TX - Damian and Trina Mandola and Mandola’s Italian Market were proud to award an all expense paid trip to team Giavonni Squared on Sunday, October 2nd.
Thirty-three total teams competed in the tournament. Twelve teams advanced to the finals on Sunday. The team that came out on top was Giavonni Squared, a team comprised of the father and son duo of Buddy and Blake Francese. The Francese’s almost didn’t play due to a conflict that weekend and when asked about almost missing the tournament, the excited pair stated that, “Winning would be an added bonus but we are just here to have fun with family & friends, eat Mandola’s great food all coming together to support the Burke Foundation.”
Giavonni Squared had to win six games in the double elimination tournament to get to the finals including one game against family members, Michael Francese and his son Mike Jr. Their win earned them an all expense paid trip for 2 to Italy, spending 2 nights in each city—Rome, Florence and Venice. The winner will also be provided train tickets and half-day tours at each stop.
While the event was a fun relaxed atmosphere, competitors were also helping raise much needed funds for The Burke Center for Youth in Driftwood, Texas. The Burke Center is a nonprofit organization formed in 1973 to care for Texas children who are removed from their home environments due to abuse, neglect, or problems with the law. The Burke Center in turn helps these children get the services they need to be adopted.
“I am so very proud to have once again donated more than $4,000 from this event,” said Damian Mandola, “thank you to all involved for making our 2nd Annual Bocce Tournament a success. See you next year!”
Mandola’s Italian Market and Trattoria Lisina are known for their imported wines from Italy, breads, sausages, pasta, gelato and traditional Italian cooked dishes.

The Comeback of Mandola Wines
Through a partnership with one of the top winemakers in the state of Texas, Kim McPherson of Mcpherson Cellars, we have been able to source amazing offerings. Kim bottled and cellared the wines for us in Lubbock, and then just to show off, he took some of the Sangiovese, added a little Tempranillo and some magic, and developed Amarosso- an off dry red specifically made for enjoying on a brutally hot Central Texas afternoon.
Just to be sure we weren't being biased with our love of these wines, we called in an old friend to give his opinion. That friend happens to be Master Sommelier Guy Stout, one of the most knowledgeable wine personalities (if you have met Guy, you know we really mean personality!) in Texas. His opinion- we have struck gold. The Pinot Grigio and Sangiovese sold out quickly but fear not, we have a new white Vermentino and a reserve Sangiovese that Guys touts as easily rivaling last seasons offerings.
• Vermentino, Mandola 2010
A rich, floral aroma of white flowers and peppery spice, dry on the palate with a hint of earthy mineral character and stone fruit of plum and pear. Crisp and clean in the finish with a delicate rich, creamy texture.
• Stellare, (as vibrant as it sounds!) Sangiovese Reserve,Mandola 2009
A rich, ruby color with hints of amber, bright floral character of red roses and lavender with a mix of red and black fruit. Savor the round, rich flavors of black cherry and plum with a touch of cedar, leather and tobacco. Firm tannin quality gives the wine grip. Finish is long and lingering with a warm, earthy quality.
• Amarosso, Mandola 2009
Off dry and bursting with juicy fruit. Fresh cherry and red plum gush out of this summer blend. Served lightly chilled. Caution: slightly addictive!
